What is RDAP?

The Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) is an updated version of the popular Whois service. It was set up in 2015 with the aim of addressing some of the shortcomings of Whois and improving its query service.

What is Whois?

When you register a domain, the registration data join a public database called Whois. It stores information regarding the extension:owner,domain registration and expiration dates, associated DNS servers, etc.

What is RDAP for?

Like Whois, its fundamental function is to provide information related to domain registration data: owner, registration and expiration date, associated DNS servers, etc. As users, we may be interested in accessing this information if we want to contact the domain administrator to negotiate your purchase with him, to inform him of possible technical problems that we have detected, or because we want to report any type of irregular behaviour related to your domain.

In addition, the RDAP protocol also provides information about IP addresses or Autonomous Systems (ASN).

How can I look up a domain’s details?

To check a domain’s registration details, you just have to enter its name in the search box provided and click on Query.

The information that we display to you will depend on the domain’s extension and the registration service available for it.

How are RDAP and Whois protocols different?

RDAP is the improved version of the Whois tool. Its objective is to present the information of each query in a more structured and secure way, and of course complying with the new General Data Protection Regulation (GRPD). Whereas Whois returns the information in plain text and without encoding format, RDAP does so in JSON format and presents it as a table. In addition, the queries made through the RDAP protocol are made through a secure connection or HTTPS.

Can I update my domain’s contact details?

In most extensions, such as .COM or .NET, you will be able to update your information in a moment from the Domains section of your dinahosting Control Panel. Other domains, such as .ES, have some requirements. Call us or write to us and we will indicate the steps to follow.

Why is there no data on the .ES domains?

With the entry into force of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Registry of the .ES domain has applied updates to its Whois policy, so that neither the contact email, telephone number or address address, among other data, are currently listed in the Whois.
